Joel Bolster was born in 1798 in New Hampshire and died in 1876 in Barre, Washington County, Vermont. He married Fidelia Reed. Together, they had daughters Fidelia Bolster (1826-1921), who married Arad Towne Smith (1817-1886), and Calista Bolster (1836-1921), who married Levi J. Bolster (1836-1908). Upon his first wife's death in 1844, he remarried twice. His second wife was Lucinda Bancroft (married in 1845) and his third wife was Catherine Brockway (married in 1848). In the 1850 U.S. census, Joel Bolster is listed as working as a carpenter. He had arrived in San Francisco by January 1851. From there he seems to have headed for diggings in Yuba County and Nevada County.
